Fire Sweeps Through Suffolk Townhouse Complex

SMITHTOWN, NY — Firefighters knocked down a fire that tore through a six-unit townhouse building at the Willow Condo Complex in Smithtown Wednesday, the Smithtown Fire Department said in a news release.

The fire was reported at 11:43 a.m. Wednesday at the complex, which sits on Plantation Drive off Mount Pleasant Road, officials said.

The fire burned through the roof of one of the units and extended to the surrounding units, officials said.

As crews—which included those from nearby agencies who helped the Smithtown Fire Department—attacked the fire from the inside, there was a partial collapse of the second floor in two units, officials said. Crews began to extinguish the fire from the exterior.

The fire was brought under control by around 12:45 p.m., according to officials. Crews stayed working at the scene until around 2:20 p.m.

The cause of the fire, which appears to have originated at the back of the unit, is under investigation by the Town of Smithtown Fire Marshal’s office, officials said.

"Every day I’m impressed with the dedication of our members, but today I’m especially proud of their actions," Chief Duckham said in the news release. "When [they] were faced with an advanced fire upon arrival where numerous immediate actions were needed, they quickly put together a plan and executed it flawlessly."
