HS West Homecoming a Resounding Success

Bulls take care of business on the field, defeating West Islip 26-16.

It was a successful homecoming week at Smithtown High School West as the varsity football Bulls advanced their record to 3-2, remaining in the playoff hunt and leaving fans cheering on what was an otherwise chilly late afternoon homecoming celebration on Oct. 11.

HSW hosted West Islip High School, who took an early lead before the Bulls came storming back on two short second-quarter touchdown runs by quarterback Dan Caroussos and running back Garrett Brunsvold. Caroussos later threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Chris Crespo, finishing with 144 yards passing on the day along with 25 yards on the ground and a two-yard run for two-point conversion. Brunsvold closed out the scoring with a 42-yard touchdown run as HSW triumphed 26-16.

The No. 7 nationally ranked HSW cheerleaders performed at halftime and cheered on the hometown Bulls throughout the game. The HSW kickline also performed at the half and the 2014 homecoming court was introduced, with seniors Sarah Mayr and Justin Soriano crowned queen and king, respectively. Cheerleader Skylar Fantaci sang the National Anthem.

All pretzel sales from the game were donated to the Tom Cutinella Athletic Scholarship Fund, created in memory of the Shoreham-Wading River varsity high school football player who died last week following a collision on the field. More than $600 raised during the game was donated to the fund. A moment of silence was also held for Cutinella prior to kickoff.

Although the annual homecoming parade was cancelled due to earlier rains, HSW students enjoyed numerous activities leading up to Saturday’s game. Students dressed up in the themed garb of the day for Spirit Week, culminating with a pep rally on Friday.
