UPDATE: School Officials Catch Person Who Wrote Threatening Graffiti

As a precautionary measure, officials still increase police presence and searched bags on Friday.

Smithtown High School East officials announced on Friday night that the individual who wrote the threatening statements in the school bathrooms has been identified.

The school did not release any information on the individual who was identified but did say that the person is no longer on school grounds and that Suffolk Police is currently handling the situation.

The messages referenced the school's Junior prom that took place on Friday night. Officials did not state what the messages said.

"Please note that at no time were any of our students in danger as our safety and security remained high," principal Kevin Simmons said in an automated call.

Despite this, the school did still increase police and security presence as well as searched all backpacks throughout the day as a precaution.

Smithtown High School East officials announced that there will be an increased police presence at the school on Friday after threatening statements were found in the student bathrooms.

In an automated call to parents, principal Kevin Simmons said Suffolk Police have been notified and a thorough investigation has been initiated after the graffiti was found Thursday.

Police and additional security guards will be on campus during the day Friday as well as at night during the junior prom.

In addition, all backpacks and belongings will be searched before students enter the building during the school day and during prom.

"Police will aggressively pursue the person who wrote the graffiti and the district will prosecute that person to the fullest extent of the law," Simmons said in the call. "Please be assured that District personnel are trained in the procedures that will enable our students to attend school in a safe and orderly environment."
