October is GMO Awareness Month

October is GMO Awareness Month

I love October and fall and all it brings, the fantastic colors the trees turn, the crisp air in the mornings and the cooler temps in the afternoons, and of course Halloween!

But October is also GMO Awareness Month and because we have first hand experience with them I am doing my part to help spread awareness. I'm ever watchful for GMOs because as I write this my daughter is home sick today because she accidently came into contact with someone's GMO-laden cookie crumb during snack or lunch yesterday. Obviously there is no way to avoid this short of our school instituting a certified organic lunch program (not a bad idea!) and insisting all snacks brought to school be organic.

Now, what to do about Halloween? My daughter is on the fence about it.  She keeps asking "What's the point? I can't have any of the candy." And she's right. She can't. I seriously doubt that there will be houses giving out organic candy to the trick-or-treaters. In all honesty it's expensive! I know because I buy it so she will have some sense of normalcy. To get a idea of how wide spread GMOs are check out this list of candy on The Holistic Doula: http://http//bectheholisticdoula.blogspot.ca/2013/10/gmos-in-your-candy.html . Fifty nine brands made this list! FIFTY NINE!!!  But she also has some excellent Non-GMO alternatives: http://http//bectheholisticdoula.blogspot.ca/2013/09/gmo-free-halloween-project.html . I sincerely hope you will give them a try.

From my GMO-free family to yours, have a happy, HEALTHY, and SAFE Halloween.
