Pair Assaulted During Fight Over Pokémon Go Hotspot

It happened outside a Long Island bank, police say.

Smithtown, NY — Two people were assaulted during an apparent fight related to Pokémon Go outside a Suffolk County bank on Tuesday night.

According to Suffolk Police, a 21-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were outside the People's United Bank at 1 E. Main Street in Smithtown playing the massively popular augmented reality mobile game when a group of four males and one female approached them at about 10:40 p.m. The group wanted the two men to move away from the Pokémon Go "hotspot," police said.

When the men refused, one of the males in the group punched them both in the face, police said, and the group fled the scene.

Both victims refused medical treatment at the scene, police said. No arrests have been made.

The incident occurred a day before a teen was robbed at gunpoint while playing Pokémon Go in Lake Ronkonkoma.

According to SurveyMonkey, Pokémon Go is now the biggest mobile game in United States history, with just under 21 million daily active users in the country as of Tuesday, more than the ever-popular Candy Crush.

But despite the fun and positives, including, gamers say, the fact that it gets players outside, visiting locations they may have never seen, there are potential dangers, including physical injury, and even crime, authorities say.

The game has also lead to some grisly discoveries. A man playing Pokémon Go in search of virtual creatures in New Hampshire Thursday stumbled across a dead body floating in a brook.
