
SMITHTOWN, NY - A school bus fire broke out in Smithtown on Tuesday morning, Suffolk Police confirmed.
Police received a call of a school bus on fire on Parnell Drive and Plymouth Boulevard at 8:32 a.m.
The bus driver, with one student aboard, was in the process of making school pick-ups when he saw smoke coming from under the dashboard of the bus, according to the Smithtown Fire Department.

Both the driver and the student were able to safely evacuate the bus before it caught fire and was totally engulfed in flames.
Local firefighters quickly worked to bring the blaze under control. No injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department.
Smithtown School District Superintendent Dr. James Grossane said in a statement that the district is grateful for the "quick thinking and actions" of both the driver and matron during the fire to ensure there weren't any injuries.
"The safety and well-being of our students and staff is the top priority of the Smithtown Central School District," Grossane said.
