SMITHTOWN, NY — Chewy and Mando, a couple of 1-and-a-half-year-old kitties named after "Star Wars" characters, are the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pets of the Week.

Chewy (orange) and Mando (grey) are domestic short hair cats who are named after two classic "Star Wars" characters; Chewbacca and the Mandalorian.

"They lost their home after their previous owners had to move," the Smithtown Animal Shelter wrote in a statement. "Mando can be a little shy at first and takes some time to open up, while Chewy loves everyone and is a big attention seeker. Both of these guys have shown how outgoing and affectionate they can be. Chewy has a very mild heart murmur that needs monitoring with yearly vet visits, but otherwise, they are both very healthy."

Chewy and Mando would do well in a family with other cats or children, but they should be kept away from dogs, according to the shelter.

"While we would love for them to go to the same home, they can be separated if need be," the shelter wrote.

There are currently a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster.

"If you are looking for a fun-loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two," the shelter stated.

All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter has reopened, but because of the coronavirus, the shelter is continuing to practice social distancing in its facility, as well as indoor mask guidelines.

Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers and kennel attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.

The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time.
