SMITHTOWN, NY — Cookie, an 8-year-old female terrier mix known for her doorway greetings, was named the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week. She was described as a "fun and goofy gal."

"Cookie is destined to bring love and happiness to one lucky family," the shelter said in a statement. "With a puppy-like demeanor, a lapdog mentality and fantastic manners, she’s a great fit for families with kids over 12, or for the empty nester looking for the world’s best doorway greeter! Cookie loves to play in the Dog Park and give out sloppy kisses to everyone she meets."

Cookie lived most of her life in a happy and loving home. Sadly, her former owner died. Her new family couldn't provide her the safety she required and surrendered Cookie to the shelter where she now lives, waiting for that special person to come in and give her a happily ever after.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.

The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for extended time.
