SMITHTOWN, NY — Mr. Smithers, a 10-year-old domestic shorthair, was named the Smithtown Animal Shelter Pet of the Week. He was brought to the shelter by a Good Samaritan who found him crying in a bush on Smithtown Boulevard. Mr. Smithers, who shares a name with The Simpsons character, has quickly learned how to enjoy his life at the shelter, stealing kisses and scratches behind the ears from the staff and volunteers at every moment of the day.

"Mr. Smithers likes to nudge your hand to get your attention," the shelter said. "We bet you won’t be able to stop petting this furry Purr-baby."

The shelter discovered Mr. Smithers has a manageable hyperthyroid condition that is maintained with daily medications.
