SMITHTOWN, NY — Parker, a male chihuahua mix between 8 and 9 years old, was named the Smithtown Animal Shelter's featured pet of the week. The petite pup has been through the wringer, according to shelter staff.

Parker's owner died of coronavirus complications two months ago, shelter staff said. His two geriatric doggy siblings went into foster care, while Parker was brought to the Animal Shelter.

"Parker is an absolute love mush who loves all people, and most other dogs and cats!," shelter staff said.

Parker has a heart murmur that currently does not require any medications, but this may change in the future, the shelter said. He does have food aggression, so he cannot be placed in a home with small children, either.

"It may require a bit of extra attention and care to meet all of Parker’s needs, but the extra work is worth it when he snuggles up with you," the shelter stated. "Parker has been through a lot in his little life, and all he wants is love, attention and a comfy lap to sleep on. We know his hero and forever home is out there for him somewhere."

If you are interested in meeting Parker, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with him in a domestic setting, which includes the shelter's Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs and the Dog Walk trail. Family Pet Meet and Greets and at-home interactions are also welcome and an integral part of the adoption process.

Due to the coronavirus, the Smithtown Animal Shelter has had to restrict public access to confirmed adoption appointments and animal/wildlife rescue. Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only.
