SMITHTOWN, NY — Zendaya, a black and white female domestic shorthair between 5 and 6 months old, is the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week.

She is gentle, affectionate, and a total sweetheart, according to the shelter. Zendaya is named after the actress famous for her role as MJ in the Marvel "Spider-Man" movies, among many other projects.

Zendaya has special needs, as she has feline leukemia, according to the shelter.

"As a result of this, she should either be the only cat in the home, or should live with other cats who are also Feline Leukemia positive or are vaccinated for it," the shelter wrote. "She will have a shorter life span, so she needs a family who will make the most of her time and will give her lots of love. It takes a special kind of person to open their hearts to a Feline Leukemia affected cat, but we promise that Zendaya is worth it."

There are currently a variety of male and female cats & kittens available to adopt or foster.

"If you are looking for a fun-loving, yarn tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two," the shelter stated.

All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter has reopened, but due to the coronavirus, the shelter is continuing to practice social distancing in its facility, as well as indoor mask guidelines.

Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers and kennel attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.

The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time.
