Smithtown Math Teacher Presented With Excellence in Teaching Award

Congratulations to Marianne Schoepflin!

Smithtown High School East math teacher Marianne Schoepflin was recently the recipient of the Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award.

The award was given to her by New York State Lt. Governor Kathleen Hochul on Sept. 23.

The 10-year educator earned the award after a nomination and application process that seeks out teachers who inspire students and colleagues.

After presenting Schoepflin with the award and $5,000 scholarship, Hochul told her students, “You are fortunate to have the very best teacher in the state. Absorb all you can from this role model.”

Principal Dr. Kevin Simmons said Schoepflin is truly deserving of the honor.

“Her assuming personality transforms into a remarkable educator who motivates her students to be the best they can be,” he said. “She is a selfless, natural leader who makes the most abstract concepts easily understandable to those fortunate enough to be in her class.”
