SMITHTOWN, NY — General music students in Mr. Bielski’s class at Accompsett Middle School got to play an interesting instrument during their class on Wednesday, according to the Smithtown Central School District.

Students watched online videos on the theremin, an electronic instrument that can be played without being touched. They then tried the instrument for themselves. The theremin uses two antennae; one for pitch and the other for volume. The antennae create an electromagnetic field and players move their hands over the magnetic box to create different sounds.

After each student played the theremin, the class created music together using drums, bells and tambourines.
