Smithtown School Budget Vote, Board Election Tuesday

What you need to know.

Smithtown residents will head to the polls on Tuesday to cast their ballots on a proposed 2015-16 school budget and for school board candidates.

The proposed $229.5 million budget represents a 0.91 percent spending increase over the current year and it includes a 2.21 percent hike in the school tax levy, which is within the state tax cap for the district.

In addition to the proposed budget, there are three candidates running for two seats on the Smithtown Board of Education. Incumbent Christopher Alcure is running unopposed for re-election. Challengers MaryRose Rafferty and Jeremy Thode are facing off for the seat being vacated by Matthew Morton, who is not running for re-election.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Accompsett, Nesconset, Smithtown and St. James elementary schools. If you are unsure of your voting location, click here.
