Smithtown School District Appoints New Assistant Superintendent
Daniel Helmes was named assistant superintendent for pupil personnel services, effective July 1.

SMITHTOWN, NY — Daniel Helmes was named assistant superintendent for pupil personnel services by the Smithtown Central School District, effective July 1, according to a news release. He replaces Mona Tobin, who retired at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.
Prior to joining Smithtown, Helmes was the coordinator of middle school special education at Half Hollow Hills Central School District, a position he held since 2007. He also served as an assistant director of special education at East Greenbush Central School District from 2005 through 2007.
"I am honored and thrilled to become a part of the Smithtown Central School District," Helmes said. "Smithtown has a tremendous reputation for setting high expectations for students, and assisting them with the tools necessary to learn, succeed and grow as individuals. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work with the special education department in their continued efforts to progress and enhance programs for students, parents, community members and staff."

Helmes has a bachelor degree in psychology from SUNY Albany and a master’s degree in school psychology from the College of Saint Rose. Additionally, he holds a master’s degree in educational administration from SUNY Albany. He is also certified in school district administration.
