Smithtown Student a Top Craftsman

Congrats to Smithtown High School West senior and Wilson Tech student Cortland Terris.

Congratulations to Smithtown High School West senior and Wilson Tech student Cortland Terris, who was awarded first place in the SkillsUSA statewide carpentry competition.

Judges awarded him perfect marks based on his precise workmanship on a shed that he built in just a few hours at the competition, held in Syracuse. The top medal propels Cortland into the national competition, which will be held in Louisville, Kentucky, later this month. A second-year carpentry student, Cortland won first place in the regional SkillsUSA carpentry contest earlier this spring and plans to continue his education at Farmingdale State College studying construction management.

SkillsUSA is a national student organization that offers leadership, citizenship and character development programs to complement the skills training that vocational students receive in career and technical programs at Wilson Tech. The competition required students to demonstrate the skills they had learned in their Wilson Tech programs.
