Smithtown Students Know the Geometry of Snowflakes

Middle schoolers combine their curriculum with some seasonal fun.

Math students at Accompsett Middle School in Smithtown combined their curriculum with some seasonal fun as they created Geo Snowflakes prior to the holiday break.

Eighth-grade geometry students in Sheri Fallacaro’s class used Q-tips, glue and parchment paper to construct the snowflakes. The exercise showed that no two snowflakes are the same and allowed students to study geometric relations found in a hexagon and review concepts such as lines, angles, bisectors, symmetry and polygons. The project also brought out their artistic inventiveness.
