Should the Smithtown Town Board Buy the School District Building? [POLL]

The town recently took another step towards possibly purchasing the local school district's administrative building.

SMITHTOWN, NY - The Smithtown Town Board recently took another step towards possibly purchasing the local school district's administrative building.

According to Newsday, the town board paid the real-estate firm Michael Haberman Associates, based in Mineola a total of $6,500 to appraise the administration building located on 26 New York Avenue.

Earlier this month, the town board announced their interest in purchasing the building after a contract with Tennessee-based developer Southern Land Company, LLC to build one- and two- bedroom apartments for $14.8 million or $71,000 per unit, was cancelled.

In a statement, Superintendent Dr. James Grossane said the district would be happy to work with the Town in regards to possible land development proposals.

"Any plans that the district considers for the sale of the property must be fiscally responsible to the taxpayers of the school district," he said.

Deputy Supervisor Tom McCarthy told Newsday that the town is considering using the building and fields behind it for municipals offices and a park.
