SMITHTOWN, NY — Third graders at St. James Elementary School recently learned about the life and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Smithtown Central School District announced.

Prior to the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, the classes read "Martin’s Big Words." They learned about the "big" words behind the civil rights activist’s dreams, such
as kindness, peace, love, respect and his other messages to inspire the world. Students
brainstormed other big words that they found important in his messages. Each student wrote about how they felt about Dr. King’s words as well as words that are most important to them.
