Suffolk Sheriff Discusses Crime With Seniors At Luxor Mills Pond

Sheriff Toulon spoke with seniors about protecting themselves from crimes like email scams, pickpocketing, and mall parking lot holdups.

ST. JAMES, NY — Sheriff Errol Toulon visited senior residents of Luxor Mills Pond in St. James on Tuesday to discuss crime prevention and ways to stay safe.

Nearly 35 residents, their families, and staff listened to Toulon speak about crimes in Suffolk County.

Toulon taught attendees how to protect themselves and their loved ones from in-person and email scams; mall parking lot crimes; pickpocketing and the best way to hold one's money and credit cards; keeping car doors locked, even on one's own driveway; handgun safety; the best way for women to carry their handbags; and the "growing issues of mentally ill grifters" seen at train stations, malls and walking the main streets, said Jeffrey Jacomowitz, the director of corporate communications for Centers Health Care.

“Speaking here at Luxor Mills Pond was key because the elderly are the most vulnerable when it comes to many kinds of crime,” Toulon stated. “Whether it’s them or any of their loved ones, you have to try to be cognizant as possible when you go out. We saw this a lot during the holidays but it’s all about crime prevention and day in and day out, we are here to protect everyone but it’s never easy.”

Toulon, the 67th and current sheriff of Suffolk County, spoke for an hour. He answered questions at the end from the residents. Toulon is the first African-American sheriff in Suffolk history.
