What is Krav Maga?

Learn more about Israeli Krav Maga and it's history and why it's such a good method of personal self defense.

Krav Maga translates to “contact combat.” It is a system of Self Defense developed in Israel by Imi Lichtenfeld, an Eastern European, who migrated from Hungary to Israel. Imi expanded on his street fighting skills as a means of defending the Jewish quarter in Bratlavia against fascist groups in the mid-to-late 1930s. In the late 1940s, following Imi’s immigration to Israel, he began to provide lessons on fighting to what later became the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). As a result of this Krav Maga was born. It is constantly evolving for Military, Law Enforcement and Civilian use.

Krav Maga philosophy emphasizes situational awareness, the psychology of a street confrontation, threat neutralization and an aggressive array of defensive and offensive techniques. Krav Maga is utilized against single or multiple attackers; unarmed attackers or armed attackers with impact weapons, pistols, rifles or knives. Krav Maga is used today by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) including Special Forces (Commandos), Israeli Law Enforcement and Military & Law Enforcement all over the World. It is a simple, effective and easy to learn system that anyone can learn regardless of your age, experience, or fitness level.
