Woman Seriously Hurt in Smithtown Crash

The crash occurred in front of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church early Thursday, police say.

A woman was seriously injured when her car crashed into a brick light column in front of Smithtown’s St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, overturned and then hit a tree early Thursday, police said.

According to police, a woman was driving her 2014 Chevrolet Cruze westbound on Jericho Turnpike near Terry Road at 1:48 a.m. when her vehicle left the roadway.

The woman was transported by Smithtown Fire Department ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries. The name of the woman is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.

Jericho Turnpike was closed for several hours due to the investigation and the removal of large amounts of debris that resulted from the crash, police said.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information about this crash to contact the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
