Thirty years ago, The Birdcage made history as a commercial gay comedy made by the Hollywood studio system. But the success of that movie stands on the shoulders of its precedent, the 1978 French-language adaptation of the original stage play. A delirious farce set against the flamboyant backdrop of the St. Tropez drag club, La Cages Au Folles stars Ugo Tognazzi as Renato Baldi, the proprietor of the club, who agrees to hide his progressive lifestyle to placate his son from a previous relationship when he shows up with his conservative in-laws in tow.
Tony-nominated playwright Jeremy O. Harris (Slave Play) joins the Playhouse in person to present the film and discuss its legacy. The conversation will be followed by an afterparty across the street at Shippy’s.
