Charming Covered Bridge In Hamptons Gets State Nod

BRIDGEHAMPTON — There's a charming covered bridge right in the heart of the Hamptons — and it just got a statewide shout-out, named one of the Top 9 most charming in New York.

The Ludlow Greens covered bridge is located .03 miles from New York State Route 27 in Bridgehampton, east on Sawasett Ave., which becomes Edgewood Ave., according to nycoveredbridges.org.

According to OnlyInYourState.com, the Ludlow Greens covered bridge, ranked #6, was built in 1990 — newer than most of the bridges on the list — and is the only covered bridge in Suffolk County; it extends over a small pond.

Covered bridges, the OnlyInNY.com site says, are the highlight of a fall foliage trip, with 29 located across the state. "There’s something so nostalgic about the sight of a covered bridge, and there are plenty in New York to enjoy," the post said.

The Ludlow Greens covered bridge, according to NYcoveredbridges.org, was built in 1990 by Jonathan Foster and is a span of 51'; it is a pedestrian bridge maintained by its owner.

The bridge "incorporates the Town lattice truss design, patented on January 28, 1820, and again in 1835 by Ithiel Town of New Haven, Connecticut. It is one of three covered bridges in New York State with horizontal siding," the site added.
