Helicopter Noise In The Hamptons: Residents Fight Back

BREAKING: Hate helicopter noise? Here's how to file your complaints online.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — As the summer season heats up, there's a new way for Southampton Town residents to lodge complaints about the helicopter noise they say is ruining their quality of life.

To further address noise abatement for Southampton Town residents caused by the East Hampton airport, Councilwoman Christine Scalera sponsored a resolution in April that enabled the town to post a link to a noise complaint registry on its website.

Airnoisereport.com, an online complaint registry where residents can register their complaints about loud or excessive aircraft noise, will launch on the Southampton Town website on Friday, just in time for the coming Memorial Day weekend.

“One of the members of the town's airport noise advisory committee brought Airnoisereport.com to a town board work session and all of us agreed that our residents need a tool through their own town to log these complaints and to know their voices are being heard from their local leaders,” Scalera said. “I am committed to keeping everyone’s feet to the fire at all levels of government until we see some measured relief for our residents here in Southampton Town.”

Many of the flight paths from the East Hampton Airport are over easterly portions of the Town of Southampton, including communities such as as Bridgehampton, Water Mill, Sag Harbor, Noyac, and North Sea.

Airnoisereport.com will keep the complaint information and send the town monthly reports on complaints logged, the type of aircraft and where the complaints stem from.

The link will be accessible via the Town’s website on May 19 and there will also be a dedicated link for residents to access Airnoisereport.com with one click. For additional information, contact Councilwoman Scalera at 631-287-5745.

Southold and East Hampton Towns were the first on the East End to utilize the Airnoisereport.com website, with Southold taking steps last July to let residents weigh in with their complaints.
