The train involved was the 4:30 p.m. departure from Hunterspoint Avenue, due into Montauk at 7:44 p.m., officials said.

As a result, the train was terminated at Hampton Bays and the LIRR arranged for buses to meet the train to allow the customers to continue their trips. Service on the Montauk branch was formally suspended east of Speonk until 10:39 p.m., resulting in two additional affected trains, the MTA said.

The 6:17 p.m. departure from Jamaica, due into Montauk at 9:07 p.m., was terminated at Speonk, where customers were able to connect with bus service that had been arranged by the LIRR. The 10:05 p.m. departure from Montauk originated instead at Speonk at 11:25 p.m. The LIRR arranged for substitute bus service for customers from all stations from Montauk through Westhampton. Buses connected with the train at Speonk, which then made all its regular stops to Jamaica, the MTA said.

The first train to operate east of Speonk, to Montauk, was the 8:52 p.m. train from Jamaica, due into Montauk at 11:46 p.m., which operated on time, the MTA said.
