"This fragile duo is in need of your support." The mom came from Central America with no support, needs help while recovering from surgery.

FLANDERS, NY — "We need heroes."

The words were simple but urgent: Minerva Perez, executive director of Organización Latino-Americana, or OLA, of Eastern Long Island, took to social media to ask for help for a mother and daughter who are in desperate need of help.

The daughter, who is called only "M." in a heartfelt video, has cerebral palsy; her mother will undergo major surgery Saturday and needs assistance in caring for her daughter while she recovers.

With no support, the two came from Central America, seeking safety, Perez said.

"The daughter doesn’t need much but she needs someone in the home to make sure she is safe. Mom will not be able to exert herself in any way," Perez said. "This is huge. But we are hoping to assemble a team of helpers to be at their home for two or four- hour blocks of time."

The mom and her daughter live in the Flanders area. "We need your help. Please share this post if you can’t offer your time or possibly, the funds to hire a caregiver for this eight-week period of time. Thank you for all your love and concern," Perez wrote on Facebook.

The "angels" who volunteer will be vetted by OLA and then, provide basic care for the young woman while the mom is at home recovering. "This way we are not asking strangers to be in the home alone with daughter. We want all to be comfortable in this arrangement," she said.

"This fragile duo is in need of your support," Perez said. If you can help, call 631-871-3408.
