Southampton African American Film Festival to Take Place This Week

The event will kick off on Thursday.

The Southampton African American Museum will be hosting their 10th annual African American Film Festival will take place in Southampton this week.

The theme of this year’s festival is “Sing Your Song”.

The festival will take place from Thursday, October 1 to Sunday, October 4 at the Southampton Arts Center on 25 Jobs Lane.

The schedule of the festival is as follows:

Thursday:

  • 6:30 p.m. - Martin, Malcolm and Me, directed/written by J.D. Lawrence. Q&A to follow.

Friday:

  • Spoken word/live jazz performances by R&B singer Cheryl Pepsii Riley, HBO Def and Grammy Award Poet J Ivy, Dynamic 2x Grammy Award singer/songwriter Tarrey Torae, and the jazz quartet Charles Certain and Certain Moves.

Saturday:

  • 1 p.m. to 2:22 p.m. - Soundtrack For A Revolution, by Bill Guttentag and Dan Sturman.
  • 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. - Marvin Gaye: What’s Goin On, directed by Sam Pollard.
  • 4:15 p.m. to 5:35 p.m. - Half Past Autumn: The Life and Work of Gordon Parks, directed by Craig Laurence Rice. Q&A to follow with the film’s line producer Bruce Nalepinski.
  • 7:15 p.m. to 8:32 p.m. - All Me: The Life and Times of Winfred Rembert. Q&A to follow with the film’s producer Vivian Ducat and artist, Winfred Rembert

Sunday:

  • 1:30 p.m. to 2:04 p.m. - Julian Bond: Reflections from the Frontlines of the Civil Rights Movement, by Eduardo Montes-Bradley. Panel discussion to follow with civil rights experts Natalie Byfield, Carol Spencer, and William Pickens III, followed by a Q&A.
  • 2:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. - Marley, by filmmaker Kevin Macdonald.
  • 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. - Bessie, directed by Dee Rees.

All films at the festival are $12 in advance and $15 at the door.

The final film “Bessie” is open to the public and payable by only a donation to the Southampton African American Museum at the door.

Tickets for Thursday stage play and Friday’s performances are $30 for adults and $20 for children in advance $35 for adults and $25 for children at the door.
