Traffic Stop Leads To Man Charged With Stealing Car: Police

A passenger in the front seat was also arrested and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, police say.

RIVERSIDE, NY — A Patchogue man was arrested after a traffic stop in Riverside Wednesday, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, Jeffrey Edsall, 50, of Patchogue, was stopped on Flanders Road after an officer saw him driving without a seat belt.

The officer determined that the vehicle Edsall was driving had been reported stolen; Edsall was arrested and charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony; second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor; and numerous traffic infractions, police said.

Edsall was processed at Southampton Town Police headquarters and turned over to Suffolk County Police due to an active arrest warrant issued by the First District court, police said.

In addition, the front-seat passenger, Olimpio Colon, 50, of Riverhead, was arrested and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, police said. Colon was processed at Southampton Town Police headquarters and released on a field appearance ticket to return to court at a later date, police said.
