'Petite' Creperie Opens in Pawling

Monday August 20, marked the long-awaited opening of “Petite,” a crepe café located at 10 East Main Street in the Village of Pawling. Although the café bears no signage as yet (“It’s coming,” according to chef/owner Lucas Muehlenweg), plenty of patrons were on hand for the first day of business.

I was there on day two along, with four family members, and was not surprised to find the crepes delicious and the ambiance impressive and inviting. I had attended parties catered by Chef Lucas so I knew of his culinary talents, but I didn’t realize the caliber of his pedigree. Wife Linda was happy to share that Lucas was an instructor at the French Culinary Institute in New York City before becoming private chef to a prominent member of American royalty (whose name we are not allowed to mention) as well as many other celebrities.

The menu consists of savory and sweet crepes for breakfast and lunch, including fillings as simple as sugar and lemon juice to fresh whipped cream and berries to spinach and goat cheese (which I had and loved). For something heavier, there’s “Steak Frites.” a marinated NY Strip Steak with herbed garlic butter or portabella mushroom with parsley butter.  Then he offers Belgian style French fries served with various dipping sauces (not to be missed!). The daily breakfast special is a bacon, egg and cheese crepe with coffee (also delicious) for $5.

I asked Chef Lucas why he chose crepes. “Crepes can be filled with so many different ingredients, as gourmet as you want, and still be affordable. It makes sense in this economy.” And did you know that crepes are one of the purest forms of takeout? We were shown an ingenious eco-friendly take-out container for diners on the run.

As former owner of BaklaJava at the same address, I was amazed to see how Lucas and his wife Linda have transformed the space. It’s simply gorgeous, sleek and comfortable, in all white. They have maintained a partially-open kitchen so the Chef is close at hand. I love the oversized photograph of Aretha Franklin.

Petite is currently open seven days a week, from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Chef Lucas expects to expand hours on the weekends in the coming months and also plans to add one dinner seating per evening in the future.
