Brewster Bubbly Bears Opens at Brewster High School
Students Launch a District Laundry Service
The Brewster Bubbly Bears laundry service had its grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony recently. Made possible by the Brewster Education Foundation (BEF), the service is run by the Brewster High School Career Skills class and serves the entire district.
The Bubbly Bears will wash, dry, and fold school items like physical education pinnies, uniforms, nurses’ blankets and spare clothes. Students will each have specific jobs. Some will do the washing, folding or drying. Others will be in charge of taking orders or making deliveries.
Thanks to grant money from the foundation, the class was able to purchase a stackable washer and dryer. From there, teachers Sarah Barnes, Donna Schneider, and Stacie Pearl guided students in creating a business plan including figuring out how and where to advertise. They created flyers that were distributed to gym teachers, custodians, and nurses throughout the district.

To celebrate the grand opening, students did a presentation to explain all of the work they’ve done before having a ribbon-cutting ceremony. While bubbles floated through the air, Alberta Kozma, President of the foundation, cut the ribbon to an enthusiastic response.
Afterwards, students hosted a small reception. They prepared all of the food, including cut fruit and baked goods. They even got to take their first official order: a bucket full of towels from Lars Olenius, head custodian at Brewster High School.

The excitement in the room was palpable. Not only were teachers and administrators beaming with pride, but students were thrilled to be getting their business off the ground.
“I can’t wait!” said Kevin Kaufman. “I’m excited. It should be a good experience.”
Kevin went on to explain what a big responsibility the students have. Taking orders alone requires several steps. “We have to write the name, school, precise item—like towel or shirt or pinnies—and when they will be returned.”
Still, Kevin was undaunted. “I can’t wait,” he said with a big grin.
