Brewster Cross-Country Team Has Momentum Moving Into the Fall
Bears' junior Charlie Carr excelled at the recent state track and field championships.

Brewster junior Charlie Carr and his teammates are already looking forward to to the fall cross-country campaign, and Carr will enter it with plenty of momentum.
Carr excelled at the track and field state championships at Caledonia-Mumford High School in Rochester held on June 10 and 11. He finished seventh in the Division 1 section of the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:21, which earned him an all-state medal.
“This was not a personal best, however, he ran tough,” Brewster coach Joe Scelia said. “The first few laps he got bumped around, and tripped twice, which impacted his performance. He still hung in there with the best guys in all of New York State.”

Carr said that the success he had in track will be beneficial come cross-country season.
“This definitely helps a lot,” Carr said. “It’s very important to have success in track. It just gets me pumped up for cross country. It makes me want to train even more during the summer so the team and I will be ready for the fall.”

Scelia agreed with Carr that his success in the spring will carry over to the team's cross-country performance in the fall.
“Our team goal in cross country is state champions,” Scelia said. “Yes, it is a lofty goal, but along with Charlie, we bring back Justin Maguire, and Adam McIe. All three of them were All-State last year in cross country. We have to develop our four through seven guys. I am confident we will do that, and Charlie's great spring season only adds to the excitement for the fall.”
Carr says his the time and effort he puts into training paid off.
“I trained pretty hard the last few weeks leading up to the states,” Carr said. “That is probably the most important thing, that I put in the work. It feels good to put in the time and be rewarded.”
Carr admitted he would have liked to achieve a personal record, but realized he accomplished a lot at the state championships.
“I actually didn’t get a best time,” Carr said. “I was a little disappointed at that. It was still a good race. There were a lot of good kids in it. I proved that I could run with the best kids in the state. I think it’s a pretty good accomplishment.”
Carr has competed three times in the state cross-country championships, but this spring was the first time he ran in the state track and field championships.
“This is a lot different though because you are not there with your team,” Carr said. "There were a lot of fast races -- it was one of the biggest things I have been to. It was really great experience and I am hoping to be back next year.”
