Brewster High School Takes Part in Kindness Challenges

Brewster High School is wrapping up a weeks-long kindness challenge inspired by an assembly with Brian Williams, founder of Think Kindness. Funny and inspiring, Williams encourages students all over the world to ban together and take part in measurable acts of kindness. He challenges the schools he visits to take part in both a 15 Days of Kindness Challenge and a Global Kindness Challenge.

Brewster High School accepted both challenges.

Throughout the last two weeks, the high school has given students daily tasks as part of the 15 Days of Kindness Challenge. These have included anything from leaving kind notes around the school to sitting with someone new or learning how to say thank you in a new language.

“An act of kindness creates a ripple,” Williams told students before launching into the story of how his small idea for spreading kindness blossomed into a movement that helps people worldwide.

The school also began to take part in Williams’s Global Kindness Challenge. Working with schools throughout the district, the high school is competing with schools nationwide to see how many pairs of gently used, rubber-soled shoes they can collect. In December, the shoes will be shipped to an orphanage in Africa giving children there access to education.

Josie Conti, a student who brought a donation box for shoes to her gym, said she hopes these challenges have a lasting impact on students. “I hope people become more aware of how they interact with people every day and not just for the challenges,” she said.
