Audiences will remember the ensemble’s sparkling performances from past seasons – one of which featured the violinist, Hannah Choi, now one of the newest members of the New York Philharmonic. The Coalition is delighted to have Ms. Choi return to the Studio days before she takes on her position at the Philharmonic full time.
Franz Schubert’s Octet for Winds and Strings (1824) will be performed. This six movement, large-scale work is from the same period as the “Death and the Maiden” string quartet and brings the listener on a journey that is mostly joyful, but at times somber and mysterious. The performers are: Hannah Choi, violin; Ji Min Lee, violin; Yangzi Wang, viola; Patrick Hopkins, cello; Ivy Wong, bass; Caitlin Beare, clarinet; Brenton Foster, bassoon; Wing Lam Au, French horn.

The musicians will provide the historical context of the work, speak of their own musical journeys, and share their experience on taking orchestral auditions and pursuing careers in music. This will be followed by an audience Q&A. We encourage music students of all levels to attend to gain insight into winning jobs in professional orchestras or learn of other careers in music.
