Classes Canceled After Phone Threat Targets High School

"Out of an abundance of caution, Carmel High School administration has closed the school today," the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said.

CARMEL, NY — The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said it is investigating a threat involving Carmel High School that was received by phone.

UPDATE: Police have cleared Carmel High School.

"There is no credible threat to the school or the public at this time," offcials said in statement released on Tuesday evening. "The Putnam County Sheriff's Office will continue to conduct an investigation into the reported threat. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office thanks the Carmel Police Department and all assisting agencies for their response and support."

The start of classes had already been delayed due to weather when the announcement that classes would be canceled was made.

"At this time, there is no information to indicate that the threat is credible," the sheriff's office said in a statement released on Tuesday morning. "Out of an abundance of caution, Carmel High School administration has closed the school today. A large police presence remains in and around the school while the investigation continues.The safety of students, staff, and the community is our top priority."
