PUTNAM COUNTY, NY β Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that an Ossining man was killed in a car crash Monday on New York Route 22 in the Town of Patterson. Louis Arpi, 56, of Croton Street in Ossining, died as the apparent result of trauma injuries he sustained in a head-on collision between the car he was driving and another vehicle.
The crash happened at about 6:30 a.m. on Columbus Day on Route 22 near the intersection of Thunder Ridge Road. Route 22 was closed for hours afterward.
According to preliminary reports, Arpi was driving alone in a 1986 Toyota van heading north on Route 22. Ahead of him, Damiana Mackoon, 47, of Newton Road in Patterson, was driving alone in a 2005 Jeep Liberty heading south on the road.

Mackoon reportedly attempted to pass a southbound tractor-trailer in a passing zone, but she was apparently unable to complete that passing maneuver and her vehicle struck Arpiβs oncoming car in the northbound side of the road. The two vehicles collided head-on.
A passerby called 911 to report the crash. Sheriffβs deputies, state troopers and EMS units responded to the scene, where Arpi was pronounced dead.

Mackoon suffered only minor injuries in the crash. She was taken by ambulance to Danbury Hospital, where she was treated and released.
The crash closed Route 22 to traffic for about three hours as state police and sheriffβs investigators reconstructed the crash and worked to clear the scene.
