Cops End Standoff On Bullet Hole Road

A young man was taken for evaluation.

MAHOPAC, NY — An hour-long standoff on Bullet Hole Road Sunday evening began when police were called at 6:20 p.m. to check on a young man reported to be possibly suicidal.

When a Carmel police officer arrived, the 20-year-old became highly agitated. Police said he informed the officer that he would not go back to the hospital and that he would get a knife and stab whoever tried taking him there. He then fled to his bedroom, barricading himself in and threatening to burn the house down and stab any officer who attempted to gain access.

At that time, additional officers from the Carmel Police Department, as well as deputies from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, responded to the scene and set up a safety perimeter around the house. Additionally, the Putnam County Emergency Response Team ( ERT) was activated and responded to the residence, along with the Putnam County Hostage Negotiation Team. The Putnam County ERT and Hostage Negotiation Teams are specialized interdepartmental units consisting of members from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the Carmel Police Department and the Kent Police Department.

The Emergency Response Team members surrounded the residence while the Hostage Negotiation Team attempted to make contact with the subject who was alone and still barricaded inside his bedroom.
The Hostage Negotiation Team was able to make phone contact with the young man, while the ERT members
maintained their position outside the residence. The lead negotiator spoke with the young man for about one
hour and was able to convince the subject to surrender peacefully to the Emergency Response Team members who were outside.

The young man was then transported by members of the Carmel Police Department to an area hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. No injuries were reported to civilians or law enforcement members, police said.
