Deputy Nabs Brewster Pair With Active Warrants

After the traffic stop it turned out that the driver didn't have a valid license but did have some heroin, police allege.

BREWSTER, NY — A Putnam sheriff's deputy picked up two Brewster residents with active arrest warrants when he stopped a car for committing traffic violations on Route 22, Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley Jr. reported.

Deputy Kevin Radovich said he observed a vehicle commit traffic violations in Patterson on Nov. 20. While conducting a traffic stop, Radovich learned that the driver, John Covias, 40, of Brewster, had a suspended New York State driver’s license, and also had two active warrants out of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.

Covias was also in possession of heroin, and hypodermic needles for which he did not have a prescription, police allege.

In addition, Radovich learned that Covias' passenger, Benlynx Garcia, 35, had an active warrant out of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Both driver and passenger were placed under arrest and transported to the Putnam County Correctional Facility for processing.

Covias was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree (Class A Misdemeanor), Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle (Unclassified Misdemeanor) and Possession of a Hypodermic Instrument (Class A Misdemeanor).

Covias posted $250 cash bail, and was issued an appearance ticket for a future court date in the Town of Patterson Justice Court. He was then turned over to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, for the active warrants.

Garcia was processed and transported to the Town of Patterson Justice Court for arraignment by the Honorable Justice Anthony Mole.

Justice Mole sent Garcia to the Putnam County Correctional Facility on $250 cash-bail/$500 bail-bond. She posted bail and was released.
