Free Skin Cancer Screening at Putnam Hospital

Registration is required—here are the details.

Current estimates show that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, according to statistics gleaned by the American Academy of Dermatology.

Melanoma—the deadliest form of skin cancer—accounts for 50,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the U.S.

In Putnam County, a 2013 study by the New York State Department of Health and New York State Cancer Registry showed that between 2006 and 2010 the incidence of melanoma occurred in an average of 22 people per year.

Detection and diagnosis are critical as most melanomas can be cured if found early.

Each year, Putnam Hospital Centers hosts a free skin cancer screening in collaboration with the American Academy of Dermatology’s SPOTme Skin Cancer Screening Program.

  • This year’s free screening is from 4:30 to 8 p.m. June 17, in the hospital’s Wagner Cancer Pavilion, 670 Stoneleigh Ave.
  • Registration for the free skin cancer screening at Putnam Hospital Center is required. Please call Sarena Chisick at 845-279-5711 ext. 6263 or email her at schisick@health-quest.org.

Four dermatologists—Salvatore DiGrandi, MD, Andrew Gutterman, MD, Jeffrey Schachne, MD, of the Mount Kisco Medical Group and Cindy Hoffman, DO—will conduct the screenings. The physicians are on the medical staff at Putnam Hospital Center.

In accordance with the American Academy of Dermatologists, the physicians performing the free screenings are prohibited from treating the participants.

If a suspicious lesion is detected, participants are told of the importance of a follow-up examination. It is their responsibility to arrange for an exam with a dermatologist of their choice.
