Group Protesting Corrupt Officials Wants Recall Laws in New York

A petition is being circulated in Putnam asking county lawmakers to support bills under consideration by state legislators.

An ad-hoc group, Citizens for Responsive Government. is circulating a petition on the topic of recall votes for corrupt officials.

It seeks support from Putnam County lawmakers for legislation now under consideration in Albany that would give New Yorkers the ability to mount recall efforts against elected officials.

"NYS, one of the most corrupt in the nation, leaves citizens without recourse to remove public officials," said Ann Fanizzi, one of the organizers. "Do we have to wait until things are so blatant that only Preet Baharra can relieve us of these corrupt criminals?"

New York is a state that desperately needs to empower the people to remove corrupt and incompetent public officials, she said.

The push in Albany comes from a bipartisan group of lawmakers, The Daily News reported.
