K-9 Vinn Sniffs Out Hidden Compartment On I-684 Containing Heroin, Cocaine, $24K Cash: NYSP

TOWN OF SOUTHEAST, NY — A hidden compartment might keep contraband out of sight, but there's a K-9 officer with a nose for this sort of thing, according to police.

The New York State Police say that on Tuesday, around 12:55 p.m., members of the Troop K Community Stabilization Unit, while assigned to the District Attorney's Safer Highway Initiative (DASH), pulled over a vehicle traveling north on I-684, in the Town of Southeast.

Police say the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was identified as 38-year-old Manuel De Jesus Genao Gutierrez, of Queens.

After an exterior scan of the vehicle, NYSP K-9 Vinn alerted troopers to the presence of narcotics, cops said.

After searching the vehicle, troopers report finding a hidden compartment with more than 1,800 glassine envelopes containing around 58.1 grams of heroin; a vacuum-sealed plastic bag and several glass containers, together containing around 128.2 grams of cocaine; and approximately $24,000 in cash.

Gutierrez was arrested and charged with felony second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance; two felony counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance; felony criminal possession of a controlled substances; and misdemeanor second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation.

He was arraigned in the Town of Carmel Court and remanded to the Putnam County Jail.
