[Letter to the Editor] Wanted: Male Actors

Dear editor,

I’ve been wondering if it’s lack of interest, lack of better communication, lack of availability or just plain old stage fright.

I’m speaking of the lack of male actors auditioning for local theatre. I’m Clark Cameron, artistic director for the Brewster-based Mission Theatre Ensemble [MTE] and the turnout for past auditions, when it comes to men, has been discouraging.  

We’ve seen tremendous talent from the females at past auditions. Last May we presented Steel Magnolias with an amazing cast of ladies. We’ve also seen some incredible talent from new women at our 2012 auditions. I’ve tried racking my brain to find new and creative ways to encourage men to audition. I’ve reached out to other local theatre groups such as . Judy Marano and Christopher Gladysz, both from BTC, told me that this is the situation that they experience with their auditions too.  

So, I guess I’m putting it out there, asking for some ideas or perhaps hoping to spark some interest from the guys. Male actors who come to audition for us don’t have to be afraid or think they’re not good enough. Sometimes we, as producers and directors, can spot buried talent and work with them to realize a rewarding experience. We also are good at working around scheduling conflicts. We know that they are not paid professionals and that everyone 'has a life.'  

So, here’s the challenge. If, for any reason, you guys have been holding back from auditioning and you’ve been interested—give it a shot! Let’s show audiences what the local men can bring to a show!
