Memorial Day 2022: Brewster

BREWSTER, NY — In addition to the traditional parade and solemn ceremony scheduled for May 30, Brewster also has a cookout at Markel Park and its first Memorial Day community 5K run, "Freedom is NOT Free."

The Memorial Day event schedule: Parade participants line up at the Brewster Fire Department at 10 a.m. The parade will kick off at 10:45 a.m., heading south on Main Street past the train station then down to Memorial Field for the ceremony, presentation of wreaths and rifle salute.

A BBQ will be held afterward at Markel Park. Everyone is welcome.

The 5K run will begin at 12:30 p.m. making a circle down Main Street to Peaceable Hill, past Lake Panetta and on to the park.

Registration fee includes a free T-shirt and all the proceeds will go to local programs to benefit veterans, their families and the community. Learn more on the post's Facebook page.

The run is hosted by Brewster Post 672 Veterans of Foreign Wars & Auxiliary, the Town of Southeast Fireworks committee and the Brewster Chamber of Commerce.

"We're excited about it," Andres Gil, senior vice commander at VFW Post 672, told Patch. "We're hoping to make it an annual event."
