A New Year's Eve to Remember

The Landmarks Preservation Society of Southeast proudly restored a beloved annual tradition this New Year’s Eve, bringing the community together in a heartwarming celebration. As snow gently blanketed the ground, families and friends gathered at the historic 1794 Old Southeast Church to mark the arrival of the New Year. The Old Southeast Church in the town of Southeast is the oldest house of worship in Putnam County and, in 1972, became the first site in Putnam County to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is used for educational purposes and as an ecumenical venue for events, weddings, and tours.

The church, beautifully illuminated by flickering lanterns, created a magical atmosphere that welcomed everyone into this cherished event. Community members were invited to take part in the evening’s festivities by ringing the church bell, an opportunity that filled the air with a sense of shared history and unity.

Following the bell ringing, family and friends sang Auld Lang Syne, enjoyed hot chocolate, and expressed excitement to ring the bell next New Year's Eve!

In a meaningful gesture of community spirit, historic churches across the area rang their bells to celebrate REV250. This night not only marked the turning of the year but also marked the beginning of the celebration of our country’s 250th anniversary of Freedom.

From this moment forward, the bell at the Old Southeast Church, built in 1794, will continue to ring out each New Year’s Eve at midnight, reminding us all of our shared heritage and the bonds that unite us as a community.
