Obituary: Clara Porta, Former Brewster Resident

A funeral Mass will be held Friday at St. Lawrence O'Toole Church in Brewster.

Clara Porta of Brookfield, CT, formerly of Brewster and the Bronx, NY died peacefully at Danbury Hospital in Danbury, CT on April 17, 2022.

Born in the Bronx, NY on August 10, 1923, she is the daughter of John and Adelina (Enoch) Biavaschi.

Clara attended school and graduated from high school in New York City. On November 27, 1949, she married the love of her life, Silio Porta.

Clara was kind, thoughtful and cared deeply about her family. She was a good problem solver, both practical and resourceful. Clara was always up for a DIY project with Silio. Whether it be painting, wallpapering, or repairs, they worked and learned how to do these things together.

Clara worked as a seamstress before becoming a full-time homemaker. She created many beautifully detailed cross stitch pieces which she shared with her family. Clara also volunteered at the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx and eventually she would volunteer, for over 30 years – into her 90s- at the Southeast Museum in Brewster, New York.

Clara is survived by her children, Ron (Carolyn) Porta of White Plains, NY, and Denise (David) Paume of Danbury, CT; her grandchildren, Alex (Lacie Zassman Porta), Andy (Diana Salas Porta) , Elliot, and Melissa; her great-granddaughter, Luna; her sister, Angelina Prevosto of Brewster, NY; and her nieces and nephews. Clara was predeceased by her beloved husband in 2004.

A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 22 at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church at 10:00 in Brewster, NY. Inurnment will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Southeast Museum in Brewster or charity of your choice.
