John A. Steinhardt, of Putnam Lake, NY, died Friday, March 27, 2020 at home with his family by his side. He was 80 years old.
John was born February 12, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late John and Anne (Pirnat) Steinhardt. John graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in Queens, NY. Following graduation, John graduated from the New York City Police Academy as well as the New York City Fire Academy. He honorably served in the Marine Corps.

John married the love of his life, Elaine C. Lambe at St. Brigid’s Church in Brooklyn, NY. John and Elaine have called Putnam Lake home for 47 years.
John began his career as a New York City police officer serving in the 81st precinct in Brooklyn, NY. Four years later John joined the ranks of the New York City Fire Department, where he served as a fireman with Engine 96 – Ladder 54, retiring in 1992 after 30 years of service.

John enjoyed life, which was evident in the many organizations he took part in or was a member of. John was a member of the Holy Name Society of the FDNY, as well as the Knights of Columbus –Fr. Breen Council in Putnam Lake. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Putnam Lake. He was an avid Brooklyn Dodgers fan and later an avid Mets and Jets fan. John was a hunter and fisherman. He was a jack-of-all-trades, keeping busy with many a project through the years including building his house in Putnam Lake. When his family was young, he was President of the Putnam Lake Little League and he coached as well. John was a loving husband, a proud father, a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather and awesome uncle.
Besides his wife Elaine of 57 years, John is survived by his three children, Jenine (David) Carlson of New Milford, CT, John (Cristina) Steinhardt of Madison, CT, and James (Emily) Steinhardt of New Milford, CT; eleven grandchildren; Amanda (Spiros) Stefanatos, Alexa (Aaron) Landolt, Lauren Steinhardt and her fiancée Lorenzo Stellato, Jameson Steinhardt, David Carlson, Rachel Steinhardt, Tyler, Abigail, Alyssa, Alaina and Greyson Steinhardt; three great grandchildren; Arianna and Ava Stefanatos and Jack Landolt; his sister, Anne (Rudy) Tretter of Monticello, NY and his sister-in-law Geraldine King of Putnam Lake, NY and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Putnam Lake, NY at a future date.
A private burial will take place in the near future at St. Lawrence O’Toole Cemetery, Brewster, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to the Putnam County Unit American Cancer Society, 220 Route 6, Mahopac, NY AND/OR the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, TheAFTD.org
