Obituary: Thomas Cerqua of Brewster
A longtime teacher, he is remembered by many of his former students as having a profound impact on their lives, his family said.

Thomas (Tom) Cerqua of Brewster, New York passed away peacefully on December 18, 2022, in Danbury, CT. He was 87 years old.
Tom was a lifelong New York state resident. He was born on December 24, 1934, in Bronx, New York son of the late Michael and Mildred (Adamo) Cerqua. Tom attended New York University in Manhattan where he earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in Physical Education.

Tom was a gifted athlete, the kind that could try something once and become more skilled than those who practiced for many years. He was on the baseball, wrestling and track teams in high school and college, setting many records that stood for years.
Tom proudly served in the United States Army from 1951-1959. He was an Army Ranger, 75th Ranger Regiment. He was proud of being an Army Ranger and of his service to the country. He would talk about the camaraderie, training, and dedication of those with which he served.

Tom became a teacher and coach in the 1960s primarily in the Yonkers City School District. Schools included Franklin and Burroughs Junior High Schools and Roosevelt High School. To this day, he is remembered by many of his former students as having a profound impact on their lives.
Tom was a lifelong animal lover. He owned many dogs which gave him joy, love, and companionship. He bred and owned champion Great Danes. He enjoyed traveling the country with his wife Diane to dog shows and competitions.
Tom leaves behind Diane, his loving wife of 33 years, daughters Lori (Joseph) and Christina (Frank), granddaughter Ana, his beloved dog Natale, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Tom is predeceased by his parents Mildred and Michael, brother Louis, sister Rachael, and his daughter Linda.

A private family burial will take place at Milltown Rural Cemetery in Brewster, New York.
