Police Resolve Stand-Off In Carmel

The Putnam County Emergency Response Team and Hostage Negotiation Team ended up involved.

CARMEL, NY — Police spent hours Friday dealing with a person in crisis on Union Valley Road in Carmel.

At 10:51 a.m., the Carmel Police Department received a request to check on the person's welfare. The person has a history of mental health issues and was known to not respond to officers attempting to make contact with them at their residence, police said.

Still, they tried to make contact by phone for several hours.

Then the Putnam County Emergency Response Team and Hostage Negotiation Team, which is comprised of members of the Carmel Police Department, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, and Kent police department, were sent to the scene along with an ambulance from the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department which was put on standby.

After three hours of talking, negotiators were successful in talking the person out of the residence without incident. They were transported to Putnam Hospital Center for a mental health evaluation.

Carmel police thanked members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Kent Police Department, and the Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion.

Because the incident involved a mental health crisis, the subject’s name or address will not be
released, police said.
