Power Outages Plague Hudson Valley Monday Evening

The utility companies reported scattered outages; Putnam County was hardest hit.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — All four utility companies that serve the Hudson Valley reported power outages Monday evening.

  • NYSEG had whittled its outages down to two by 10:30 p.m. Almost 3,000 customers of NYSEG were without electricity before 6 p.m. Monday. They were among a total of 12,650 powerless customers reported by the utility on its website.
  • O&R halved its outages.
  • Central Hudson remained the same.
  • Con Ed was down to 31.

NYSEG reports more than 13,000 customers out; 2,774 of them were in Carmel and Kent in Putnam County.

Orange & Rockland reports 448 customers out.

Utility companies warned that high electric use during the heatwave could lead to brownouts. Con Edison sent out a press release Monday morning, for example, saying that its crews were standing by in the case of power outages. Central Hudson sent a notice to customers

Please conserve energy this afternoon. Extreme heat and humidity may prompt higher energy use today as residents and businesses rely on air conditioning to keep cool. Please do what you can to reduce electric use today, especially from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. when system-wide electricity demand is highest.
