Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell congratulated the Carmel
High School Rams for making the state football championship for the
first time in the school’s history.
“Carmel is a small town and Putnam is a small county, so to see our kids
succeed like this against much bigger, better funded rivals is really
fantastic,” County Executive Odell said. “It really brings us all together
as a community.”
As Carmel High School fans and alumni throughout Putnam County
cheered on Saturday, the Rams, who have been undefeated all season,
beat Newburgh in the NYSPHSAA Class AA Semifinal and advanced to
the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The Rams will play Buffalo’s Bennett
Tigers for the state title on Saturday Dec. 4.
The Rams began the season carrying 40 flags onto the field before their
first game, a long-standing Carmel tradition that took on special
meaning because it happened to be the eve of the 20th anniversary of
9/11. Putnam County was proud to lend the flags to the team, a
reminder of the respect county residents pay to the veterans who serve
our country.
“I want to congratulate the team and the coaches, particularly Coach
Todd Cayea, and wish them good luck in the championship game,”
County Executive Odell said. “You have already made Putnam proud
and we will be cheering you on the whole way.”
